Yu Darvish’s bidding period has recently ended and the main concern for the New York Yankees this offseason has been starting pitching. However, due to the lack of intriguing free agents and high asking prices from teams, the Yankees have not been able to make any significant moves.
This left Yu Darvish as the Yankees best option because in a sense he would cost nothing. Brian Cashman and the Yankees should have made an offer for the Japanese pitcher that blew away all other teams offers.
Reports are saying that the Toronto Blue Jays were the highest bidder, with a bid around $40 million to $50 million. The Yankees have endless pockets and were thought to have submitted a bid. It is yet to be confirmed who has officially won the bidding, but the Blue Jays should not even be in the discussion.
For the Yankees, money is basically nothing because they are the wealthiest franchise and not afraid to spend their money. Yu Darvish would have been a free risk. He would have only cost the Yankees money and not key prospects like a trade for Gio Gonzalez, John Danks or Matt Garza will cost them.
Apparently the Athletics are asking for Jesus Montero, either or both Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances and more for Gio Gonzalez. That offer is way too expensive for the Yankees because it would cost them prospects and not money, like Yu Darvish would.
If the Yankees were going to make a bid, that probably means they have interest in Yu Darvish. So if they were making a bid, why not make a substantial bid and make sure you get him? The Yankees could be hesitant because of their recent experience with Japanese pitcher Kei Igawa.
Yu Darvish has much more potential and is more highly praised than Kei Igawa. This could be a way for the Yankees to make up for the Igawa move and make everyone forget about it.
In a time where America is struggling economically, sports are still thriving. This includes the New York Yankees franchise and owners. The Yankees only move this offseason is resigning Freddy Garcia, who did have a good year for them last year.
However if the Yankees want to get out of the first round of the playoffs and have another ticker-tape parade, Garcia is not the answer. Behind C.C Sabathia, the rotation is filled with question marks. With a weak market, Darvish is the best option for the Yankees and they may have missed their opportunity on a potential star pitcher to be added to their rotation.
