Yankees Trade Rumors: Chase Headley Isn’t Worth New York’s Top Prospects

The New York Yankees are interested in San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley (h/t Jon Heyman, cbssports.com), but with the Padres asking for multiple top-level prospects, the Yankees should turn their attention elsewhere.

According to ESPN’s Jayson Stark, the Padres are looking to trade Headley for something very similar to what they got for Mat Latos last season. That trade brought them three quality prospects—Yonder Alonso, Brad Boxberger and Yasmani Grandal—and starting pitcher Edinson Volquez.

While Headley is a versatile defender who is having a career year at the plate, he’s certainly not worth that price tag. Besides, it’s not like the Yankees are desperate for immediate help.

They currently have a 6.5-game lead in the AL East, so their playoff spot isn’t in danger. They should also have Alex Rodriguez back by mid-September, which would give him 15-20 games to work his way back into form before the postseason begins.

In the meantime, the Yankees can go with a committee at third base, using Eric Chavez and Jayson Nix. Neither guy is spectacular, but they can hold down the fort until A-Rod returns.

It wouldn’t be the most exciting move, but the Yankees should either stand pat or pursue a cheaper third baseman before Tuesday’s deadline. Headley is a solid player, but he wouldn’t be a major difference-maker in New York.

The Yankees should pass on Headley and keep their top prospects to either build around or use as trade bait at a later time.
