Yankees Trade Rumors: Bronx Bombers Should Stay Away from Chase Headley

Perhaps you thought the New York Yankees were done shopping once they landed outfielder Ichiro Suzuki from the Seattle Mariners.
And then Alex Rodriguez had to go and break his left hand. With that, the rumors began to spread that the team would be in the market for a third baseman. One major name on the list of players they might be interested in included Chase Headley.
And frankly, I think the Yankees should stay away. Thankfully, they are likely to look elsewhere. From Joel Sherman of the New York Post:
An official with knowledge of Headley’s market said he “did not think the Yankees will be a fit.” That is because well before A-Rod fractured a bone in his left hand Tuesday night, the Padres were discussing Headley with multiple suitors.
Obviously, the Yankees don’t need a long-term third baseman, they simply need a temporary stop-gap to share time with Eric Chavez.
Plus, it’s unlikely the team will want to pay the steep price Headley is going to cost, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports:
The Yankees are unlikely to make a big push for Headley after losing Alex Rodriguez, who’s probably out until mid-September with a broken hand, because they don’t want to give up the prospects it would take.
Frankly, I don’t see what all the fuss over Headley is about. His career-high marks in home runs (12), RBI (64), batting average (.289) and OPS (.773, though he is up to an “amazing” .787 this season) don’t exactly evoke thoughts of Mike Schmidt.
He’ll be overvalued because he’s 28, has two more years left on his contract after this season and because steady third basemen are hard to find.
But is he worth a major haul, especially for a team that will get A-Rod back in September?
No. Not in the least.
The team needs to find a decent veteran player who will come at a low cost and can fit in a third-base platoon with Chavez. Someone who will give them some production, but more importantly, won’t completely kill them at the position.
Or kill the farm system in a trade.
Yes, a player like Ty Wigginton from the Philadelphia Phillies would make sense. According to Kevin Kernan from the New York Post, however, the Phillies aren’t willing to move him.
At least not yet.

But that’s the sort of player that makes sense for the Yankees. Not Headley, who one team will dramatically overpay to acquire.
For once, the Yankees would be best served letting another team overpay and simply weather the storm until A-Rod returns.
