Yankees 5, Indians 2
The New York Yankees and the Cleveland Indians wrapped up the final game between the two teams of the season. New York sent out the somewhat struggling Joba Chamberlain while Cleveland started Jeremy Sowers who is coming off a bullpen stint.
The game for Sowers did not start off so well. The first batter, Derek Jeter, singled to extend his hit streak to 15 games. Mark Teixeira singled just two batters later to extend his hit streak to 14 games.
Joba was also cruising as he was perfect through two innings. In the top of the third, Brett Gardner singled to start off the inning. Gardner also stole second and then got to third on a Derek Jeter infield bunt. Nick Swisher grounded into a double play which led to Gardner crossing home for the first run of the game.
Designated hitter Victor Martinez jacked a home run over Nick Swisher’s head in right field to tie up the game in the bottom of the first, but that was the only bad thing Joba would do in the whole game as he poised for victory.
When it looked like the Yankees were going to score, there was a few drops of rain and lightning. Swisher came through with a bases loaded two-run double scoring Ramiro Pena and Brett Gardner to put the Yankees up 3-1.
After a pitching change, Alex Rodriguez came through with a single off the glove of Asbrubal Cabrera which scored Jeter and Swisher.
Joba would let up one more run in the eighth and Mariano Rivera would pick up save No. 11 of the season.
Joba went eight innings that included five strikeouts, two walks and one diving catch.
Nick Swisher was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Angel Berroa started at third and was 0-for-3 while Alex Rodriguez was 1-for-4 as the designated hitter.
The Yankees start a home series against the Rangers tomorrow.
