Yankees-Mariners: Lucky No. 13 Delivers NY’s Seventh Straight Win

The New York Yankees haven’t trailed in a game since I saw Joe Girardi in my hometown of Atlanta get thrown out of the game at Turner Field.
Since that moment, the Yankees have won seven games in a row and the offense is starting to click.
Alex Rodriguez has hit four homers in his last six games and now has 13 on the season. He took a Jarod Washburn pitch to deep center in the bottom of the sixth to break a two-all tie with Mark Teixeira on first base to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead.
A-Rod has homered in two straight games in Yankee Stadium this week, and after a single in the eighth, his average has climbed up to .239 on the season. He remains second in third base voting behind Tampa’s Evan Longoria as he looks to make the All-Star Game in St. Louis via a reserve role.
It’s been a magical last few days for Mariano Rivera. He notched career save 502 on Wednesday night to shut the door on the Seattle Mariners for the 4-2 win.
This save came after last night’s save against the Mariners and the big No. 500 Sunday night against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Melky Cabrera’s bat remains hot. After his three-RBI performance Tuesday, he hit a towering shot to the upper deck in left field that would eventually be reviewed and upheld by instant replay, his eighth homer of the year.
Andy Pettitte got the start for the Yankees and looked great early on, but a sixth inning home run off the bat of the great Ken Griffey Jr. tied the game at two. However, Pettitte would get his eighth win of the season to move to 8-3 after the Yankees took the lead in the bottom of that same inning.
Pettitte went six innings, giving up two earned runs and one walk on five strikeouts. His ERA is now at 4.25 on the season.
The Yankees are now a season high 13 games above the .500 mark at 45-32 and remain two-and-a-half games behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.
Up next for the sizzling hot Yankees is the final game of a three-game set against the Mariners, where CC Sabathia (7-4, 3.55) of the Yankees will take on Jason Vargas (3-3, 3.79) of the Mariners.
After that, this Fourth of July weekend, the Toronto Blue Jays come into the Bronx for a four-game set. Then the Yankees hit the road one more time before the All-Star break.
