Major Advantage: Everything with the Yankees is like a movie, and this year you have Kate Hudson playing the Susan Sarandon character in Bull Durham. Whoever she “dates” at the time does well including Chris Robinson back in the ’90s and now A-Rod in the postseason. He’s hitting .438 with five HR and 12 RBI. She’s like the anti-Kardashian. Can she “date” Obama next?
Major Disadvantage: Jerry Jones once dissed his ex-head coach and best friend Jimmy Johnson after he left the Cowboys with two rings, saying 500 coaches could win a Super Bowl with his team. After Barry Switzer took over and started doing Barry Switzer things, they started calling him 501. What does this have to do with baseball? It’s the Yankees’ major disadvantage, Joe “501” Girardi. How can you not win with this team?
Minor Advantage: I went to Game Six at Yankee stadium on Sunday. Despite having an “oh-fer” on the West Coast, Nick Swisher got a huge standing ovation. Is this guy Rasputin, or is he just charmed? He’s like a little kid who can just flash a big smile, everyone laughs and then forgives him. Amazing. I think he’s good karma for the Yanks.
Minor Disadvantage: Under the Geneva convention, is what the Yankees did to Joba Chamberlain considered torture? I think the Taliban would break under this kind of psychological warfare. It’s certainly gotten to Joba. Not long ago, before this failed experiment, Chamberlain was a lights-out closer with no confidence issues. When he takes the mound now, he looks more insecure than Jim Zorn did Monday night.
