The amateur draft starts today, and the Yankees get their first shot at 32nd overall, last in the first round. They don’t get any supplemental picks ,and will pick again at the end of the 2nd and 3rd rounds, 82nd and 112th overall.
In honor of the draft, I thought it would be a good idea to look at the Yankees roster and see where each player was selected.
1st Round
Alex Rodriguez (1st overall), Mark Teixeira (5th), Derek Jeter (6th), Nick Swisher (16th), CC Sabathia (20th), Greg Golson (21st), Phil Hughes (23rd), Joba Chamberlain (41st)
3rd Round
Brett Gardner, Curtis Granderson, Nick Johnson
5th Round
Javier Vazquez
7th Round
Chad Moeller, Sergio Mitre
8th Round
AJ Burnett
9th Round
Mark Melancon
17th Round
David Robertson
20th Round
Kevin Russo, Boone Logan
22nd Round
Andy Pettitte
24th Round
Jorge Posada
30th Round
Marcus Thames
34th Round
Chad Gaudin
International Free Agents
Robinson Cano, Francisco Cervelli, Juan Miranda, Ramiro Pena, Damaso Marte, Chan Ho Park, Ivan Nova, Alfredo Aceves, Mariano Rivera, Romulo Sanchez
So it looks like most of the talent is going to come in three rounds. After that ,the Yankees are as likely to sign a future major leaguer internationally as they are to get one after the 3rd round of the draft.
