It’s the Steinbrenners’ worst nightmare and Fox’s dream.
Joe Torre vs. the Yankees. Yankees vs. Dodgers.
Two baseball powers meeting on baseball’s biggest stage with the main story line being a former Yankee manager who led the team to four World Series titles, six American League pennants and 13 consecutive trips to the postseason.
Not to mention that the Dodgers bench coach is one of the most beloved figures in Yankee history. Imagine the ovation Torre and Mattingly would get at Yankee Stadium for game one of the World Series.
Hal, Hank, and George would be as far from Yankee Stadium that night as possible.
The Yankees are the most interesting team in baseball. The ratings prove it. The Dodgers would bring the other coast into the mix.
Have we even mentioned Manny yet?
Think of the stars this series would align. Jeter, A-Rod, Manny, Teixeira, Mariano. It would be the highest rated World Series in years. Finally both coast would be brought together. Red Sox fans would watch to root against the Yankees. Giants fans would watch to root against the Dodgers.
Imagine the celebrity sightings at this series. Hell there would even be a storyline there. Denzel and Jack who are normal fixtures at Lakers games, would now be wearing Yankees hats in $1,250 seats. And Larry King, a native New Yorker as a Dodger fan in Los Angeles.
Every executive at Fox is praying for Dodgers-Yankees. America loves stars, this has stars. America has storylines, this has storylines.
Don’t be surprised if you’re not watching Phillies-Angels either.
