Updating Grades, Twitter Reaction for A-Rod’s Ongoing Rehab

Alex Rodriguez had another bad day on Tuesday—and I’m not even talking about the Biogenesis scandal yet.

A-Rod suited up for the Tampa Yankees on Tuesday but once again struggled to make contact at the plate during his rehab stint.

The New York Yankees desperately need a third baseman and a solid right-handed bat in the lineup, but at the rate he’s going, A-Rod won’t be able to deliver for a while.

Let’s take a look at Rodriguez’s latest rehab start.

 

Grade

Rodriguez struggled at the dish yet again, going 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts. He’s now 1-for-12 with a single since he began his minor-league rehab.

After grounding out on the first pitch of his first at-bat, he struck out on three consecutive swings in the fifth and again went down on strikes on three pitches in the seventh.

For a 14-time All-Star who has won three MVP awards and has 647 career home runs, that’s just embarrassing.

I’ve tried to be lenient when grading A-Rod since his return to baseball, but he has shown no signs whatsoever of improving.

The Yankees are in a bad situation with their lineup, and it doesn’t look like Rodriguez will offer much help even when he returns. He has simply been pathetic.

Overall Grade: F

 

Twitter Reaction

While most of the tweets surrounding Rodriguez were about his pending situation in the Biogenesis scandal, there were a few concerning his actual play as well.

However, things got real ugly real fast for A-Rod, as he struggled at the plate and fan after fan took shots at him via Twitter, most of which I can’t even put into this article:

 

 

Rodriguez still has to focus on baseball, however, and he plans on spending the rest of the week in Tampa before being promoted again and working his way back to the Bronx.

 

What’s Next?

It was a tough day for A-Rod, but things are about to get tougher.

ESPN reported that Rodriguez is one of the headliners in a group that will likely be suspended by MLB after the All-Star break.

Commissioner Bud Selig’s office is expected to suspend Braun and Rodriguez, along with as many as 20 players sometime after next week’s All-Star break, for their roles in the Biogenesis case, several sources told “Outside the Lines.” As OTL reported, MLB started building cases against the players last month after Bosch agreed to cooperate with investigators.

 

Rodriguez has said that he wants to use all 20 rehab games, but that would have him MLB-ready after these suspension are supposed to occur, essentially ending his season before it begins.

Rodriguez’s next step appears to be to ensure that he can get on the field when he’s healthy, as The Star-Ledger has reported that he will speak to MLB officials on Friday in hopes of salvaging his 2013 season.

While his rehab is what’s important right now (after all, he has to be in shape if he’s ever going to play again), Rodriguez now has the Biogenesis scandal looming over him, and it looks like things are only going to get worse for the Yankee third baseman.
