Ticket Prices to Derek Jeter’s Final Games Soar After He Announces Retirement

New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter announced on Wednesday, Feb. 12, that the 2014 season would be his last in Major League Baseball. As you would expect, ticket prices for games near the end of his career soared quickly.
Jeter is a lock to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer. The 39-year-old has spent his entire 19-year career in pinstripes, winning five World Series, including winning a World Series Most Valuable Player award. He also made 13 American League All-Star teams. He won many awards throughout his career, but being named the Yankees’ captain in 2003 is what he will always be remembered for.
After all of that, his career is finally coming to an end. Everyone wants to be able to say that they were at the Captain’s final game—either at Yankee Stadium or on the road. With tickets in demand, prices rose quickly.
The Yankees host the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 25 in what could turn out to be Jeter’s last appearance at Yankees Stadium, and they close out the regular season at Fenway Park on Sept. 28. It’s only fitting that possibly the final game of his career could come against the Boston Red Sox.
As of 2 p.m. ET, tickets for the Yankees’ final home game of the season could be purchased on StubHub for less than $100. Those tickets were gone minutes after he announced his retirement around 10 minutes later.

According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, tickets to the regular-season finale in Boston could be purchased on TiqIQ for $26 before Jeter’s announcement. No ticket was being sold for less than $200 an hour later.
Some people may have been wise and bought tickets for cheap right after the announcement, only to flip them for a nice profit. Either way, Jeter’s final home and road games are going to be costly for fans looking to buy tickets now.
