NY Yankees Rumors: Would Signing Kevin Youkilis Be Enough?

It’s been a relatively quiet offseason for the New York Yankees.

While usually being in the thick of things for just about every big-name free agent every offseason; the Bronx Bombers haven’t appeared much at all when it comes to names like Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, Nick Swisher or Anibal Sanchez.

In fact, it seems like the only name that has really stuck out when it comes to talking about the Yankees is the formerly despised Kevin Youkilis.

The Yankees have had an offer on the table for almost a week now, according to Bryan Hoch, who reported the deal on December 6:

While it’s nice to see that the New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman is doing something to address the hole left at third base by the injured Alex Rodriguez, does signing Kevin Youkilis really make this Yankees squad a threat to win it all in 2013?

After all, this is still a team that has an aging Derek Jeter at shortstop, Mark Teixeira at first base, who earns a truckload of money every year for declining numbers, a noticeable void behind the plate and still no right fielder.

Suppose the team ends up finalizing a deal with Ichiro Suzuki—they still have a major age problem.

Derek Jeter is no spring chicken, and their rotation’s second and third starters are both over the age of 37.

Combined with the holes in the Yankees’ lineup, the age factor could pose a major problem this coming season for New York.

We’ve already seen Teixeira regress, and it’s reasonable to think that it could happen with other Yankees over the course of a grueling 162-game schedule this spring and summer.

By the time the season starts, Kevin Youkilis will be 34 years old.

His skill set and ability to get on base will surely help the Yankees, but it doesn’t make them true championship contenders, nor does it help them solve their age problem.
