Nick Johnson May Be Headed for Surgery

Since the Yankees signed Nick Johnson this offseason, the main concern on everybody’s mind was his health. Now, with the season six weeks old, we’ve already seen how fragile he is. He’s already missed over 10 games due to injury, and now we find out he may be headed for surgery. Here’s more from Joe Lapointe :

Nick Johnson, the Yankees’ often-injured designated hitter, may require surgery on his right wrist, General Manager Brian Cashman said Saturday.

Johnson, who went on the disabled list May 8 with what was called an inflamed tendon, had a cortisone injection about a week ago, Cashman said. If the shot solves the problem, Johnson might return in three weeks.

“But if it doesn’t heal it, we’ll have to have surgery,” Cashman said. The procedure would sideline Johnson for four to six weeks. At worst, Johnson could be out until July.

The article goes on to say that the Yankees will know in 10 days whether Johnson will need surgery or not.

This is the risk you take when you sign a player who can’t stay healthy on the hopes that this will be the year he finally keeps himself in the lineup.
