New York Yanks Come Back from All-Star Break with a Bang

The New York Yankees are coming out of the All-Star break with a 10-game home-stand.
Their first series is against the AL Central leading Detroit Tigers. Tonight the Yankees threw, veteran right hander A.J. Burnett. Burnett has been lights out in his previous 8 starts going 6-2 with a 2.01 ERA.
The Detroit Tigers gave Lucas French, the rookie lefty, the ball today to start against the New York Yankees.
The last time the Yankees saw a rookie pitcher from Detroit was Rich Porcello (8-6, 4.14). Porcello gave up 6 hits in 3 2/3, and surrendering 6 runs. The Yankees later went on to win the game 8-6.
In the first inning of tonight’s game the Tigers came out of the gates ready to play with a lead off double from All-Star center-fielder Curtis Granderson.
Later in the inning Miguel Cabrera drove Granderson in on a single up the middle. This was the first, first inning run Burnett has given up in five starts.
But the Yankees answered back quickly in the bottom of the 1st when left-fielder Johnny Damon drew a two out walk. Mark Teixeira then singles to move Damon over into scoring position. Hideki Matsui comes through with two outs to drive Damon in on a base knock.
In the top of the second the Tigers weren’t done yet. Placido Polanco hit a soft single which drove in John Anderson, who walked, stole second, then reached third on a throwing error by Burnett.
With the Tigers up 2-1 in the top of the fifth, Curtis Granderson homers off of Burnett to put the Tigers up 3-1 over the Yankees.
In the bottom half of the fifth the Yankees answered back with a run of their own. Johnny Damon singles to center and the next batter Mark Teixeira comes up big again to drive in Johnny Damon.
Going into the sixth inning the Yankees only trailed by one.
Burnett left the game in the top of the seventh, after pitching six innings, giving up three runs, on six hits.
Replacing Burnett was set-up man Phil Hughes who has been lights out while coming out of the pen. Hughes has an ERA of about 0.90 in the pen. Hughes shut the Tigers down in the 7th striking out the side.
The Yankees then exploded in the seventh scoring four runs on five hits. One of those hits was a homer off the bat of red hot Mark Teixeira. Which was Teixeira’s 22nd home run of the year.
Phil Hughes stayed dominate for the Yankees in the top of the eighth while he strike out the side again for a consecutive inning.
In the top of the ninth the Yankees brought in Mariano Rivera to replace Hughes. Hughes had six strikeouts in two innings while only giving up one hit.
In the top of the ninth Mariano got his 26th save of the season. He got into a little trouble by giving up a one-out double.
But Mariano is Mariano and he got out of it to give the Yankees their 52nd win of the season.
