New York Yankees starting pitcher CC Sabathia will be looking to earn his first win against the Detroit Tigers since 2013 and pick up his first victory in three starts this season when the teams square off at Comerica Park Monday night.
Sabathia (0-2, 5.68 ERA) hopes to lead the Yankees (6-6) to their fourth straight win as well but will have a tough task at hand facing the Tigers, who own an American League-best 10-2 record and are 4-1 favorites to win the pennant at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.
New York is coming off a three-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays on the road, although the team has just two wins in its last eight games at Detroit, including two losses there during a four-game sweep by the Tigers in the 2012 AL Championship Series.
However, the Yankees have won seven of the previous 11 meetings overall according to the OddsShark MLB Database with the under cashing six times in the past seven. They allowed seven runs in sweeping the Rays yet saw the total go over in all three games to move to 10-1 in their last 11 outings.
Detroit took two of three from the Chicago White Sox this past weekend, with 25 combined runs scored in the final two games of the series, both of which went over the total on the baseball betting lines. The Tigers allowed only two runs in their two wins against the White Sox and had seen the under cash in each of their previous three games.
The Tigers will send righthander Alfredo Simon (2-0, 2.03) to the mound trying for his third win in as many starts this year. Simon, at 6’6” and 267 pounds, went 15-10 with a 3.44 ERA in 32 starts for the Cincinnati Reds last season.
Simon turned in an excellent effort last time out on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates last Wednesday, allowing only two hits in eight scoreless innings with no walks and two strikeouts.
Sabathia, who is listed at 6’7” and 285 pounds, would seem to give New York a solid shot in this heavyweight pitching matchup, but he has struggled in his first two starts this year.
Despite walking just one batter in 12.2 innings with 15 strikeouts during that stretch, he surrendered four runs in each start and a combined 15 hits in losses to the Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays.
