Phil Hughes the starting pitcher tonight for the NY Yankees after garnering a 3-0 record along with a very stingy 1.86 ERA in Triple-A this season, gets ready to make his first start of the year as he replaces the injured Chien-Ming Wang. For a long time now Hughes has dominated minor league hitters, and feels like he is ready to step up and show the boys in the big show that he is ready to mow them down as well.
The 6’5″ , 240 pound righty showed he belonged in Spring training when in three starts he recorded a staunch 2.19 ERA. I know he has not had a lot of work in the big leagues, but I have a gut feeling that he has matured to the point where he is now ready to establish himself as a go to guy for the Zoo Crew.
Meanhwile his pitching opponent from the host Detroit Tigers Edwin Jackson, despite demonstrating some over powering tendencies during his career and this season, remains a inconsistent commodity because of his wildness. This guy has some great natural talent, but his lack of concentration,(4 HR’s in just 26 innings) makes him fade material against top quality offenses like the Yankees, possess. It must be noted that Jackson in 13 career outings vs the Yankees, has recorded a hefty 5.72 ERA.
Considering the pitching matchup, I very much feel we have some value backing the Yankees in this spot.
