New York Yankees Trounce Baltimore Orioles Despite O’s Late Rally

I’m beat, so I’m going to go with bullet points on this one.
- This wasn’t as close as the 12-7 score appears. The Yanks jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two and a half. Then, after the O’s cut the lead to 6-3, the Yanks sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run seventh to put the game away. The O’s would score four more against Chad Gaudin, but the game was really never in doubt.
- Phil Hughes was solid over six innings on his way to his 8th win of the season. The right-hander allowed three runs on nine hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out four. It wasn’t a great start, and he missed his spots at times, especially in a rough stretch between the fourth and fifth innings when he allowed all three runs, but it was enough for the victory.
- After barely showing up in Toronto the Yankees offense exploded for 12 runs and 15 hits.
- Nick Swisher was the player of the game. He got the Yankees on the board in the first with a two-run homer. Later, he’d blow the game open with a three-run double. Swish ended up going 3-for-5, with five RBI and two runs scored. He’s now hitting .311.
- Mark Teixeira also had three hits including a two-run homer, and walked twice. It was a big night for Tex, who needed a game like this more than anyone. Maybe he’ll start turning things around now.
- Curtis Granderson had a big game. He hit a grand slam homer in the third to give the Yankees a 6-0 lead. He also singled, scored two runs, and stole a base.
- Robinson Cano continues his amazing season. He picked up another three hits to raise his average to .370.
- Brett Gardner was the fifth Yankee to have a multi-hit game. He went 2-for-4, with an RBI and a run scored. His average is now up to .314.
- David Robertson pitched well in one inning in relief. He gave up a hit, while striking out two, and threw 10 of his 14 pitches for strikes.
- As I mentioned before, Chad Gaudin gave up four runs in relief. Over two innings he allowed five hits including a homer, and walked two. He’s been awful since the Yankees signed him and he better turn things around quick or he’ll be headed to his third team this season. The worst part of his outing was that it forced the Yankees get Mariano Rivera up in the ninth, which as Kay correctly pointed out during the broadcast, is ridiculous considering they were up 12-3 at one point.
- The Yankees have now won nine in a row over the Orioles since losing their first matchup of the season back on April 27th.
