New York Yankees prospect Mason Williams is having a great start to the 2012 season playing for the Single-A Charleston RiverDogs in the South Atlantic League.

Listed as the No. 4 top prospect in the Yankees minor league system by Baseball Prospectus, Mason has been quite impressive as a center fielder and at the plate.

On Wednesday, he had his best game of the 2012 season so far going 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and a walk, giving him a batting line of .347/.375/.507.

Mason has impressed scouts and the Yankees organization as an all-around athlete with solid hitting, good instincts with patience at the plate, above average base-running speed and as a promising outfielder.

So far this season, he has 26 hits, five doubles, two triples, one home run and six RBI with a batting average of .329 and a slugging percentage of .481. He has only struck out four times in 86 plate appearances.

Mason is young at 20 years old, but he has developed strong, solid skills offensively and defensively in his short time in the minor leagues. At the rate that he is headed now, if he continues to progress consistently, barring any injuries, he could become the Yankees’ No. 1 top prospect by the end of the 2012 season.

When Mason played baseball in high school, most scouts wrote him off as too raw to play professional baseball. The Yankees scouts recognized his potential and signed him in the fourth round of the 2010 draft.

As he further develops, teams that passed him over will regret their decisions to let him go. He is quickly learning to play center field more effectively, and he is getting stronger at the plate.

Mason’s speed has caught the eyes of the Yankees organization as he has already stolen eight bases and was caught just once. As he progresses and improves, he will learn to develop better instincts to read the pitcher and get better jumps to steal bases.

Mason has all-around talent and athleticism. Watch him as he progresses through the minor leagues. He has the potential to become a solid force and an intimidating Yankee.
