Derek Jeter is injured… Period… The end.
It could be that the heel he injured early in the year is still bothering him or has been re-aggravated, or it could be something entirely different.
With Jeter, who never talks about injuries, we probably won’t know until after the season, if then.
Nevertheless, anybody who saw Jeter “running” on Sunday knows he’s hurt. The man moves as if he’s running in a cast while dragging an anchor. Jeter was clearly and severely hobbled while going from first to third on Nick Swisher’s deep fly ball that Ichiro dropped, and then again jogging back to the dugout after a sacrifice fly later in the game.
We’ve been pretty hard on Derek Jeter lately, and I’d still argue rightly so. The guy has killed God knows how many potential chances for the Yankees’ offense over the last three-plus months (last we checked, Jeter was under 40% delivering a runner from third with less than two outs), and his defensive range, which was so good last season, has completely disappeared.
Were he ANY other Yankee, Jeter would probably be on the bench (or disabled list?) by now. Certainly he would not maintain his spot at the top of the batting order, especially given the way Brett Gardner has come on this season and the way Swisher has performed when batting second.
Bottom Line: Derek Jeter’s overall play, especially when batting near the top of the lineup, is hurting this team. However, it seems likely that the primary cause for his awful play is an injury rather than Jeter’s having hit the wall at the end of his career.
