The Yankees announced the signing of 19-year-old righty Leonel Vinas, an amateur player who has spent the last year with co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner’s Hank’s Yanks.
Hank’s Yanks is an amateur team that is made up of players “from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds throughout the New York area.”
Vinas was the ace of that team who has drawn attention to himself when he tossed two no-hitters and when he out-dueled Mariano Rivera’s son, Mariano Rivera Jr., at the “Boss’ Cup,” an amateur game held at Yankee Stadium this past year.
After three throwing sessions in front of some of the Yankees’ front office members recently, they decided to offer him a contract. He’ll start next season as a reliever in the rookie league.
Vinas went to Freeport High School in Long Island. He got a little attention locally back in high school when he struck out 23 of 24 batters in a game and finished his senior season with a 6-0 record, a 1.90 ERA and 71 strikeouts.
This is a nice signing because it shows that the Yankees really leave no stone unturned when looking for talent. He may not ever amount to much, but every now and then they may find a diamond in the rough this way.
