New York Yankees: Scout Finds Hypocrisy in Brian Cashman’s Pedro Feliciano Comments

As you no doubt know by now, New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made some rather odd comments regarding his disabled lefty reliever, Pedro Feliciano, and the way he was “abused” the previous three seasons while playing across town for the Mets.

No surprise, but we’re not the only ones who found Cashman’s comments to be not only dripping with irony, but hypocrisy, as well.

“Does Cash remember the use by Torre of Paul Quantrill, Scott Proctor and many others with NO concern about their usage?” a scout asked FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, via email. “Where was Cash then?”

According to Rosenthal, this particular scout is actually an admirer of Cashman’s! But the comment is not only fair, it’s obvious.

Cashman might not have hired Torre, but he was the GM who vigorously defended one of the greatest butchers the game has ever seen, prolonging his stay in New York by years.

Meanwhile, Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen had the obvious reaction when informed of Cashman’s comments.

“They didn’t know that when they signed him?” Warthen asked.

Good questions from both Rosenthal’s scout and Warthen. The same questions we’ve asked here and that have no doubt been swimming through the heads of God only knows how many people in and around the game.

Feliciano’s workload was called to attention and made an issue of LONG before Brian Cashman decided to sign him. So what’s Cashman’s response?

“It’s a thin market when you are out there looking for lefties, and he’s one of the better ones out there,” Cashman said. “You don’t typically run to sign up guys that have been used like that.”

Two things come to mind when I heard those latest comments from Cashman:

1) Does he not remember a guy named Scott Downs sitting on the market last winter?

2) Just because it’s a limited market doesn’t mean you have to sign just ANYBODY.

The starting pitchers market was even more limited than the lefty relievers market last winter, but I don’t recall Cashman rushing out to give a two-year guarantee and a spot on the 25-man roster to just ANYBODY after he struck out (again) on Cliff Lee.

Cashman made a mistake. Period. To sit here after the fact and whine and attempt blame others for issues that were common knowledge to all only serves to make him look weak and whiny.

Stop your crying, Brian. Feliciano is your mistake. Period. The latest in a long line. But it’s not like he’s anywhere close to being one of your biggest.

Anybody remember $40 million for Carl Pavano? How about failing to learn your lesson the first time around on Javier Vazquez? And what about that $17 million for Kyle Farnsworth? How about another $40 million for Kei Igawa?

Igawa, by the way, is expected to be demoted from Triple-A Scranton to Double-A Trenton this season. Brilliant!

I could go on and on and on, but there’s really no point. Cashman’s record is clear, and Feliciano is, sadly, just a tiny part of it. But Cashman’s contract expires at the end of this season.

Hopefully his time with the New York Yankees does, as well.
