Robinson Cano is hitting everything right now for the New York Yankees and is easily one of the hottest hitters in Major League Baseball at the moment.
Over his last five games, Cano is 12-for-20 (.600), with two home runs and eight RBI. His latest great game was at the expense of Seattle Mariners starter, Felix Hernandez.
King Felix didn’t have any more success than his predecessors with Cano picking up three hits against one of the best starters in baseball. On the night, Cano was 4-for-4 with a double and a RBI in New York’s 6-2 win.
Based on how easy he made it look and who he did it against, that was all the evidence I needed to know that Cano is locked-in.
This is all coming after a rough month of April in which Cano hit .267 with one home run and four RBI.
Funny that I say .267 is a rough month considering most average players, and even Mark Teixeira, would consider that type of month a relative success.
But Cano has MVP-type expectations for 2012 and a month like that is as close to failure as you can get. Having seen himself get progressively better each of the past few seasons, the only thing left for Cano to get is that elusive MVP.
It’s no coincidence the Bombers have won four of their last five games with Cano surging. With a more prominent role in the Yanks’ lineup than in past years, Cano’s production in the middle of the order will be huge to New York’s success.
A little help from their best player could be the shot in the arm the Yanks needed and they can now begin to separate themselves from the .500 mark.
