The New York Yankees‘ future appears to be bright due to a trio of highly-rated outfield prospects in the minor leagues, but one of them is in serious trouble as Mason Williams was reportedly arrested Thursday morning on a misdemeanor DUI charge.
According to Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times, Williams was arrested in Tampa as the prospect plays for the Yankees’ High-A affiliate, the Tampa Yankees.
Williams is 21 years of age, so he is old enough to drink legally, but he obviously exercised bad judgment in allegedly getting behind the wheel while under the influence.
Williams, who was a fourth-round selection of the Yankees in the 2010 amateur draft, figures to factor in to the Bronx Bombers’ plans in the near future. He is rated the No. 41 prospect in Major League Baseball according to MLB.com and is considered to be a potential five-tool performer at the next level.
He has gotten off to a slow start in his first full season with Tampa as he is hitting just .271 with no home runs, five RBI and two steals through 18 games. Williams showed flashes of greatness last season as he split time between Tampa and Low-A Charleston. He combined to hit .298 with 11 homers, 35 RBI and 20 steals in 91 total games.
Williams is the No. 2 prospect in the Yankees’ system, according to MLB.com behind catcher Gary Sanchez. He, along with Tyler Austin and Slade Heathcott, gives New York a formidable outfield trio that could give the Yanks a lot of flexibility moving forward.
While Williams will obviously have to earn the trust of the Yankee organization in the wake of his arrest, he is an extremely talented prospect who should still be able to thrive provided he can put this situation behind him.
