New York Yankees Prefer Matt Garza as Trade Target, Will Cashman Make the Move?

Heading into June, we’ve all wondered what kind of help the Yankees would need if they want to make a run at October.

I honestly feel they could use a bolster in the rotation and add a starting pitcher.

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Yankees have a trade target preference; liking Chicago Cubs starter Matt Garza and preferring him over Brewers ace Zack Greinke.

According to Heyman, he said the Yankees prefer Garza because he is battle-tested in the A.L. East and the transition back would be an easy one, as Garza once pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays.

With the Cubs, Garza is currently 2-3 with a 4.22 ERA with 49 strikeouts in just nine starts for the last place team in the N.L. Central.

Because Garza has high value, he can attract a decent package in return for the Cubs, and he’s been a name many of us have talked about for two years.

I have always been in favor of trading for Garza because he would add instant credibility to a rotation that needs a spark.

CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte have pitched well, but Ivan Nova, Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes have all been up and down in 2012, so getting a starter for the second half of 2012 makes sense for the Yankees.

If Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are serious about trading off their team in part of rebuilding, I could see them asking for someone like Dellin Betances as a starting point in a trade.

Personally, if Brian Cashman could work in Phil Hughes in a deal to Chicago, I would be all for it, because I think Hughes could benefit from a change of scenery.

The Cubs would like to lock up Garza to a long-term deal, but if Hoyer fails to get a deal done, then making a deal to send Garza out makes sense in their rebuilding plans.

Heyman also said the Yankees could see Astros starter Wandy Rodriguez as a backup plan to Garza, someone they tried pursuing last July, but couldn’t agree on a trade because of Rodriguez’s current contract.

I personally don’t want Rodriguez. If the Yankees are going to make a trade for a starter, Garza should be the guy, especially if they aren’t going to go after Greinke.

We are two months away from the July 31 trade deadline for baseball, so Brian Cashman has until then to decide if he wants to make a bold move to improve their rotation and go for a pitcher like Garza.

I think they need to if they want to contend for October.

Will Cashman do it though?

Stay tuned, Yankees Universe.
