New York Yankees: Hector Noesi Deserves a Shot in the Starting Rotation

The Yankees pitching staff has suffered a ton of injuries in 2011.
They can now add another big name to the disabled list.
Bartolo Colon, who has been a major surprise and been pitching so well for the Yankees, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained hamstring. Colon was 5-3 with a 3.10 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 78.1 innings pitched before being put on the disabled list Sunday.
Colon originally started the season in the bullpen as a long reliever, but when Phil Hughes was placed on the disabled list back in April with shoulder inflammation, Colon was immediately put in the rotation and did the job.
Now with the strained hamstring, the Yankees just have to hold their breath and hope the injury is not that serious and Colon only misses two starts.
With Colon now out, the Yankees will likely give rookie Hector Noesi a chance to be called back up and inserted into the rotation.
Colon was due to start again on Thursday against the Texas Rangers, but Noesi will likely be called upon to take that start.
If it is Noesi, it’s the right decision. He deserves a chance to start for the Yankees.
In four appearances for the Yankees, Noesi is 1-0 with a 1.76 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched. In his first appearance against the Baltimore Orioles on May 18, he pitched four shutout innings, allowed four hits, walked four and struck out four, while picking up his first major league win.
In his latest appearance against the Boston Red Sox on June 7, Noesi pitched six solid innings in relief for Freddy Garcia, who was ineffective in two innings. Noesi made one mistake against Boston. He left a pitch in David Ortiz’s comfort zone that was sent soaring over the right field wall.
Other than the home run, Noesi was very good pitching against Boston. He allowed three hits, two runs, walked one and struck out one.
Because he pitched six innings and wasn’t going to be available for the Yankees to pitch for a couple days, Noesi got sent back down to Scranton/Wilks-Barre.
Noesi for the most part has been used as a reliever, but he’s a starter.
He is 1-1 with a 3.92 ERA and 20.2 innings in four starts for Scranton.
In 2010 while pitching for Tampa, the A-ball team, Trenton, the AA team and Scranton, Noesi went 14-7 with a 3.20 ERA in 27 starts.
Noesi knows how to start. In 2011, he also knows how to get people out and give the Yankees quality innings and some pitching depth.
If the Yankees don’t want to rush Andrew Brackman, Manny Banuelos or Dellin Betances and force them into the majors this year, giving Noesi a shot to be a starter is one way to make sure “the Killer B’s” aren’t being rushed and brought up too soon.
If Colon’s injury is more serious than expected, Noesi could in fact stay in the majors and continue to earn his spot, just like Colon did earlier.
Yankee fans want to see the kids get called up and see what they can do in the big leagues.
Noesi being put into the rotation would be one more step in doing just that. He deserves his chance.
Hopefully, he can make good on that chance to produce more for the Yankees.
