New York Yankees: Derek Jeter Is Not the Captain You Think He Is

There is a GREAT read from Ken Davidoff up on Newsday.com right now. It’s a blog post, so you get to read it for free!
Davidoff talks about how New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, while playing catch with Robinson Cano, called New York Post reporter George King to the side Sunday to talk about a new book coming out. The book is about the Yankee captain, and specifically, says Davidoff, Jeter wanted to “distance himself” from it.
Jeter seems to have, at the very least, been an accomplice to the building of and a careful caretaker of a facade of an image that hides the truth: that Derek Jeter is a human being and less than perfect, just like the rest of us.
It’s hypocritical, AT BEST, that much of the media could not wait to tear down Alex Rodriguez when he attempted to manicure a similar white-milk-drinking image while actually HELPING Jeter build and maintain his.
Several less than perfect things about Jeter will, according to Davidoff, be exposed in two soon-to-be-released books.
FROM DAVIDOFF’S POST: “(Jeter) can hold a grudge for a very long time, he lacks self-awareness (see how befuddled he was last year that the Yankees didn’t try harder to retain him) and he’s not particularly tolerant of people (like A-Rod) who are wired differently than him. Jeter really didn’t try very hard to help A-Rod during his tough times, when the fans were all over him.”
Not exactly what you’d expect from “The Captain of the Yankees,” who will remind you at every step about how “all he wants to do is win.”
Shouldn’t the captain of ANY team HELP a teammate who is going through things like Alex Rodriguez went through in New York for YEARS? Wouldn’t an improved chance of “winning” have been a significant byproduct of helping his teammate through those issues?
Moreover, wouldn’t a captain whose lone focus is the greater good of the team “winning” recognize that his horrific play is HURTING his team’s chances of doing so? I guess that’s where the “lack of self-awareness” thing comes into play.
