Final update of the night: Arizona president Derrick Hall has confirmed that the Yankees are one of “a few teams” it is talking to about Dan Haren. He also said there is no front runner and other clubs have made offers “of at least equal value” to the Yankees’ offer.
Update 10:54: Now we’re hearing that a deal is “not that close” and that other teams are still in on Haren, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports.
Update 9:38: For what it’s worth (I really have no idea how reliable this guy is) John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR Phoenix has tweeted that Joba, Nova, and Zach McAllister is the package being offered. He also tweeted that the D-Backs have been trying to get ZMac “for over a year,” although they turned down a McAllister for Scherzer swap before the Curtis Granderson trade last winter.
Update 8:49: Frankie Piliere of AOL FanHouse is reporting that Nova may be the “key piece” of this deal and that Joba Chamberlain is possibly involved. He termed the talks “not imminent but serious.”
Original article: Apparently the Yankees are in the market for a starting pitcher after all.
According to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports , the Yankees have emerged as front runners as potential suitors for RHP Dan Haren of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Ed Price of AOL FanHouse is reporting that nothing is imminent, but Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record has reported that general manager Brian Cashman is “mulling whether to pull the trigger,” which makes it sound like they are close to a deal.
This is different than with the Cliff Lee non-trade because so far we have heard nothing about which prospects to expect in a deal. From everything that has been said the Diamondbacks expect pitching in return.
I ran down a list of possible pitchers the Yankees could include in a deal early this morning. That list included Triple-A starters Zack McAllister and Ivan Nova. Other names that might be included are David Phelps, Hector Noesi, Adam Warren, and Andrew Brackman.
Brackman is probably the biggest name on that list, but the D-Backs won’t necessarily want him as he has a relatively large contract for a minor leaguer and he’s also already on the 40-man roster.
It’s hard to say if Jesus Montero is in danger of getting traded again, but the D-Backs do have a good young catcher in Miguel Montero, so they don’t have a dire need behind the plate. Brian Cashman also made it sound like the only reason he offered Jesus to Seattle is because it was for Lee.
Haren is good, but not quite on the same level as Lee.
If the Yankees are offering up a pitching-heavy package without Montero involved this could end up being a decent deal for the Yankees. They have plenty of depth in the minor leagues as far as pitching is concerned and many of those guys project as 3-4 types which, let’s face it, the Yankees nor their fans have the stomach to watch break in to the big leagues. Hopefully they can manage to hang-on to Brackman and RHP Dellin Betances.
Keep checking back here as we will provide updates as they happen throughout the evening and tomorrow morning.
