New York Yankees: Could Hideki Okajima Be Joining the Yankee Bullpen?

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Hideki Okajima, a 35-year-old Japanese import, has been designated for assignment, and if he does clear waivers, could find himself in the bullpen of the New York Yankees.
With the bizarre behavior, underwhelming performance and current disabled list stay of grossly overpaid closer turned setup man Rafael Soriano, adding another arm to the bullpen is not a bad idea for the Yankees. A little stability wouldn’t hurt considering the constant Wilkes-Barre/Scranton shuttle for pitchers such as Lance Pendleton, Buddy Carlyle and Amauri Sanit.
After beginning his MLB career with three excellent seasons for the Sox, including an All-Star appearance and sixth place finish in the 2007 American League Rookie of the Year voting, Okajima has fallen on hard times the past two years. His career numbers are still very solid, with an ERA of 3.11 and WHIP of 1.25, though the past two seasons have seen both numbers increase significantly.
Perhaps a change of scenery would rejuvenate the former All-Star. If Okajima does clear waivers, he’d certainly be worth a look for the Yankees as they continue their march towards another playoff berth.
