According to Peter Abraham of the Journal News, the Yankees have called up 27-year-old right-handed pitcher Alfredo Aceves in place of Anthony Claggett, who was called up when the Yankees put Damaso Marte on the DL.
By calling Aceves up, the Yankees give themselves a long reliever in the bullpen to protect against either Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain from being able to go deep into their starts.
The Yankees start a two-game series against the Boston Red Sox Monday. The last time the Sox knocked a pitcher out early against the Yankees, they feasted on New York’s bullpen and stretched it thin for the rest of the series.
It’s a pretty smart move because the Red Sox offense is among the best in baseball. Even if Hughes is making real strides, it could be very hard for him to beat an elite Boston lineup that is third in MLB in runs scored.
