Pettitte will be taking the start for David Phelps, who will be moved to the bullpen, as the 40-year-old will square off against the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night.
Pettitte was 3-3 with a 3.22 ERA in nine starts with 59 strikeouts in 58.2 innings before being struck on the ankle by a Casey Kotchman line drive back on June 27.
As a result, Pettitte was forced onto the DL with a fractured fibula and has been working hard to recover from the injury, pitching in simulated games in Baltimore and Boston due to the minor league season almost being over with their playoffs going on.
It seemed like with each progression, Pettitte was feeling much better, first throwing off flat ground with no reported pain from pushing off then facing live hitters in the simulated games.
The Yankees’ team doctors gave Pettitte the go-ahead to start running and proceed with all of his rehab, which meant the left-hander was going to be successful in his attempt to pitch in September and help the Yankees in their pennant race.
Pettitte will likely be able to pitch anywhere from 60-70 pitches, so don’t be surprised if he goes anywhere from four to five innings on Tuesday night with Phelps ready to go just in case.
Getting Pettitte back off the DL is great news to the Yankees and hopefully he will provide a major boost to a rotation and a team that could use a kick-start in the next 20 games.
Great news overall for the Yankees and for Pettitte, who worked hard to come back from injury, even at the age of 40.
Now he gets to do his part in helping the Yankees get to October baseball.
Stay tuned, Yankees Universe.
