MLB Trade Rumors: Why Carlos Beltran Likely Won’t Become a New York Yankee

Carlos Beltran hopping into a subway and taking his talents from the New York Mets to the New York Yankees has been highly rumored for several weeks as buyers and sellers scramble in hot pursuit of pennant-changing players during the mid-summer trade deadline phenomenon.

Unfortunately for Yankees fans and the aficionados of the other World Series contenders, a trade sending Beltran to baseball’s most storied franchise is unlikely.

According to The Star-Ledger, a person close to the Yankees trade deadline plans has come out and said that unless a serious injury occurred to one of the stars in pinstripes, Beltran is not being looked at to be acquired by the team. Previous rumors had suggested the Yankees would prowl after a trade for the Mets’ outfielder to enhance their designated hitter position, according to the report; however, it seems the Yankees are disinclined to give up their top prospects for a high-profile player such as Beltran and would rather swing a deal for some pitching help.

Beltran, who has had a reawakening at the plate this season, is hitting .293, has 14 home runs and leads the NL in doubles with 30. The 34-year-old has not officially waived his no-trade clause, but for the right uniform that would likely change. The Mets are expected to want quality prospects in return for any players they shift off to new settings. It is not clear how much of Beltran’s remaining salary—which is near the $19 million mark—the Mets will be comfortable paying should Beltran find a new zip code.

The Yankees will finish off a series with AL East rival Tampa Bay Rays tonight and are trailing the Boston Red Sox by one game in the loss column for the division crown. Despite pitching being a concern for the Bronx Bombers, don’t be surprised if they make a move for a bat to replace the struggling Jorge Posada in the role of DH.

If we know anything about the Yankees, we know they are buyers. The question is whom will they buy?

For now, Beltran is off the Yankees’ radar.
