MLB Rumors: How the New York Yankees Match Up with the Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners seem like one of the only teams that are for sure selling their players. They have absolutely no shot at winning the division or wild card and will be trading away some moderately key players on the team.
At first when I saw the two major pitchers the Mariners are looking to move, I rejected the idea of the New York Yankees trading for them. To me, they did not seem like the best option on the market. Right now, it looks like there is a possibility that nothing happens at the deadline, so a trade with the Mariners could end up being an option for the Yankees.
Doug Fister is a name that does not exactly come up often in discussions for a semi-high caliber starter for the Yankees. If you look at stats alone, you could see the reason for this in his last two seasons. Fister posted a 4.13 and 4.11 ERA in both seasons. This season however, he has shown improvement, posting a 3.18 ERA in 133.0 IP and 19 starts.
Maybe we have not heard too much about this guy because of the surge in pitching of Jered Weaver and Justin Verlander. Do not take these stats as being an anomaly for Fister. He is 27 right now and could potentially grow into his own in New York.
It may be true that Fister is not able to acclimate well to the new environment of Yankee Stadium, but the Yankees need to give this trade a try. Since Doug Fister is not exactly a big name pitcher, Cashman would be foolish to give up anyone named Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances or Ivan Nova. These players would be restricted in a deal with Seattle, unless the deal has the name Felix Hernandez, which I am 100 percent sure will never happen.
I do see the Yankees trading away Hector Noesi, as they always seem to deny him a spot start. Remember when the Yankees used Brian Gordon?
Erik Bedard is another name that could come up in trade talks. This season, he has had a 3.00 ERA in 90 IP and 15 starts. Just from stats, Bedard seems to be a very favorable pitcher, but he is coming off of an injury. The Yankees need to wait to talk about him, if they are interested, so they could see how he pitches in a few starts. I would be wary about Bedard because of his long injury history.
For Erik Bedard, I would not give up much at all if I were the Yankees. I would try not to include someone like Noesi and would give maybe two grade-B prospects. No one special would be lost in this deal because the Mariners were lucky to get anything out of Bedard this season. This would be a low-risk, high-reward potential because the Yankees would not give up much for Bedard.
Jason Vargas is a starter who has been decent this season. If I were the Yankees, I would not trade for him because I do not think that he could have a huge effect for the team this season. The upside on this would be that Vargas is currently 28 and has a 3.94 ERA in 20 starts and 130.1 IP. They might even be able to use Vargas for depth purposes if they need, as maybe they give away someone like Hector Noesi or Lance Pendleton at most.
A deal with the Mariners could be possible, as Ken Rosenthal and Paul Morosi of FOX Sports spoke to rival executives who believe that Felix Hernandez, Michael Pineda, and Dustin Ackley are the only Mariners off limits. They also said that pitchers like Jason Vargas, Brandon League, Doug Fister and Erik Bedard are being actively shopped and are on the trading block.
