MLB Free Agents 2012: CC Sabathia Would Be Smart to Bolt Yankees for Rangers

C.C. Sabathia would be wise to consider one of the biggest rumors to hit MLB free agency this week. His job is simple: opt out and sign with the Texas Rangers.
I know there is a great deal of you to scoff at such a suggestion. I call you people Yankees fans. The rest of us understand that Sabathia would be far better off in a new locale, and Texas is better than any possible franchise.
ESPN reports the Texas Rangers are set to target Sabathia in free agencies this offseason. They, of course, have to wait a few more weeks, as they are still vying for the World Series, unlike the Yanks.
The reasons for a Sabathia departure are simple.
Rangers Are Closer to Title
This would seem like the most obvious point. Texas is still in the playoffs and are primed to dismiss the Detroit Tigers shortly.
They are once again knocking on the World Series door, and they threaten to do the same every year for the next few seasons. While the Yankees age and demure, the Rangers continue to be the team to beat in the American League.
Fans Would Love Him
This would, of course, be isolated to fans outside the five boroughs. Baseball aficionados are tired of seeing the Yankees continue to corral the best in the game with their promise of fame and fortune.
The storyline is tired: Player reaches the prime of his career, enjoying star status, then bolts to the New York Yankees. We have been there and done that. What we rarely see is a player say adios to the Bronx Bombers.
Expectations
Could the Rangers be turning into Yankees East? If they spark a bidding war, they could very well be seen as such. The one thing they will never have is the kind of expectations that follow every Yankees player.
Every season, Yankees players have to play under immense heat and pressure from the media and fans. That just doesn’t happen in Arlington.
Sabathia would be free to go out, play baseball and never worry that his every gesture will be picked apart by a baseball-crazy world.
To my chagrin, Sabathia will not leave. New York is not in the business of losing players. They are the franchise that does the pilfering, not the other way around.
But that would really be something if it did.
