Mark Teixeira, who has been suffering from a bronchial infection since early April, will sit on Sunday for the third straight game, reports Paul Casella of MLB.com.

Manager Joe Girardi hopes that the weekend of rest will be the cure to the ailment that has been hampering Teixeira all season long.

Although not many players would be okay with being given an entire series off, Teixeira seems to be the exception: “It’s not easy, but you have to sometimes take care of yourself and try to get better because it’s a long season. I want to make sure that I’m good for the long run.”

Notorious for his early-season struggles, Teixeira may be able to put some of the blame for this season’s slow start on the infection. Through 37 games, he owns a line of .228/.283/.386 with five home runs and 20 RBI.

He’s on pace for just 20 home runs and 81 RBI.

Even though he’s struggling, the Yankees could use Teixeira in the lineup. His glove is nearly unparalleled at first base, and it’s really just a matter of time before he gets it going at the plate.

He may not be a .280 hitter anymore, but the power and run production he provides are a valuable asset to the Yankees.
