Mark Teixeira is one of the Yankees‘ main power sources on offense, but the first baseman’s status appears to be uncertain after leaving Monday night’s game against Toronto.
UPDATE: Tuesday, August 28 at 4:35 p.m. ET by Timothy Rapp
Manager Joe Girardi offered a one to two week timetable on Teixeira, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News:
Girardi said Teixeira will be out “Seven, eight or 15 days.”

That concurs with what was expected. Yankees fans surely will be result for the seven or eight day prognosis.

The New York Daily News’ Mark Feinsand passes along the latest on Teixeira’s injury.
Teixeira guesstimating 1-2 weeks with Grade 1 calf strain. Jeter missed about three weeks with the same injury last summer.

The timetable for strains can greatly vary. So it was wise to throw in the “guesstimating” term in there. Hopefully for Yankee fans, that guesstimation becomes a reality.

Mark Teixeira will be out for at least five games. This is according to YES’ Jack Curry.
Girardi said Teixeira is unlikely to play in at least the next 5 games.

While the open ended qualifier of “at least” could be a bit alarming, it has to be taken as a good sign that the baseline was five games. Anything that short term will be easy enough for the Yankees to withstand.

YES broadcaster Michael Kay had this to say following Teixeira’s injury in the fourth inning:
Tex left game with a left calf strain. Will undergo MRI tonight.

Any sort of long-term injury will damage the Yankees’ potent lineup. Jayson Nix is a veteran replacement, but he doesn’t come close to Teixeira’s powerful production.
He’s hit 23 home runs and accumulated 81 RBI this season. He’s hitting .256, and his 26 doubles already equal his total from last season.
The injury occurred in the fourth frame when Teixeira seemed to have some pain in his left leg. He stepped out of the box and eventually drew a walk, but was obviously not alright. Nix then entered the game after Teixeira was lifted.
Outside of Nix, the Yankees have two options. Neither are Teixeira’s caliber, but the Yankees lineup is strong enough to withstand his absence for a short period of time.
Eric Chavez is an obvious choice, as he’s enjoying a surprising season at the plate. He has hit 13 home runs and is batting .287 in 223 at-bats this season.
New York could also give Nick Swisher a look. He may be their primary right fielder, but he has experience at first base. Moving him to the infield would avoid any shuffling in their lineup and could land Andruw Jones a more consistent spot in the order.
More information will come out concerning the Bronx Bomber’s star first baseman as the next few days pass. Make sure to check back for all the latest updates.
