Mariano Rivera Adds to Glowing Legacy with Ninth 40-Save Season

Mariano Rivera added to his growing legacy Tuesday night as he picked up his 40th save of the season, marking the ninth time he’s done it in his career.
What makes it even better is the fact that the New York Yankees had to score five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to get the ball to Rivera in the ninth. And once they did, this happened:
While the video is from the All-Star Game, you get the idea. “Enter Sandman” is one of the most recognizable entrances in all of baseball.
The save marked his 42nd career save against the White Sox, which is the fifth most he has against a team. The Orioles hold the distinction of being the team Rivera has shut the door on the most with 77, while the Rays are second (64) and Red Sox third (58).
According to ESPN New York’s Ian O’Connor, manager Joe Girardi is going to try to convince Rivera to stay one more year.
“I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t do it next year, I don’t,” Girardi said. “He’s made it pretty clear that he doesn’t want to [return], but I always say, you know, January rolls around and sometimes you have a different feel about what you want to do.”
However, Rivera has made it abundantly clear time and time again that this will be his last rodeo.
Regardless of what happens, there’s no question that Rivera will go down as the best closer ever. Nine 40-save seasons in his career only confirms that.
