FOX’s first baseball broadcast of the year has been an exciting.
New York Yankees’ lefty CC Sabathia has thrown seven innings of no-hit baseball against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Let’s pick up the action in the bottom of the eighth inning with the Yankees leading 8-0.
Game – New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays
Date – 4/10/10
Bottom 8th
Sabathia will face Willy Aybar, Pat Burrell, and Kelly Shoppach this inning. These three are 0-for-six with one K vs. Sabathia today.
Man what a play to start the eighth. Aybar hit a little chopper up the middle, the ball hit off of Sabathia’s pitching hand, the ball went to Cano, and was able to throw out Aybar by a couple of steps.
Sabathia has definitely been helped out by his defense today, but for the most part, he has been ridiculously good.
Burrell flies to center for the second out. I am sorry, but Burrell looks done.
Sabathia throws a first-pitch change up to Shoppach and he was about five feet in front. Sabathia’s change up has been awesome today.
On the very next pitch, Shoppach rips a line drive to left for a clean single. The no-hitter is officially over and so is Sabathia. As soon as he gave up that hit, Girardi lifted his big ace.
Sabathia was up to 111 pitches, so I can see why Girardi would lift him.
Perhaps I was a jinx. Oh well, I would have covered the event if any other pitcher was throwing a no-no.
