Frank Farrell and Bill Devery purchased the defunct Baltimore franchise for $18,000 and moved it to New York for the 1903 season. The team played at Hilltop Park at 168th and Broadway, and because of the location they were known as the Highlanders. Ten years later, now officially the Yankees, the team moved into the Polo Grounds, also home of the New York Giants.
It was a relatively peaceful co-existence until the arrival of a young player named George Herman Ruth in 1920. The Yanks won 95 games that year, captured their first pennant the following season, and their attendance doubled to more than one million, topping the Giants. Their annoyed hosts told the Yankees to find their own home. Adding to the rivalry was the fact the two teams faced each other in the 1921 and 1922 World Series, both won by the Giants.
