Diamondbacks-Yankees: A.J. Burnett Embarrassed, Yankees Hammered 10-4

That one wasn’t worth watching, and for the most part, I didn’t.
At least not after A.J. Burnett’ s terrible outing. The first two outs went pretty well, as he retired Kelly Johnson and Stephen Drew . But that would be the end of Burnett’s success.
Justin Upton made it 1-0 with a solo homer. Then, following singles by Miguel Montero and Chris Young , Adam LaRoche hit a three-run homer. Mark Reynolds was next, and he went deep to make it five-zip. Burnett then gave up individual runs in the second and fourth as the D-backs built a 7-1 lead.
Whether it was a hanging curve or a straight fastball, many of his pitches last night were set on a tee for the D-backs hitters and most of the time they didn’t miss. He was done after four, allowing seven runs on nine hits with two walks. Remember, the D-backs are a last place team, and that makes it four bad starts in a row. Burnett’s record stands at 6-6 with a very pedestrian 4.83 ERA on the year.
Here’s what Burnett had to say about his outing :
“I don’t feel like myself,” he said. “I’m not having fun right now. Who would during a stretch like this? The game’s supposed to be fun, and to come out and take the air out of your team right away for a handful of starts, it’s quite frustrating.”
It’s frustrating to watch too, which is why this was about the time that I started flicking through the channels. By the time I got back to the game, it was the eighth inning and Chan Ho Park was about to give up a three-run homer to Upton, his second big fly of the game.
You can’t really blame the offense too much for its performance tonight, as it’s never easy when you’re down 5-0 after one inning. However, the Yankees should have done a little more off Rodrigo Lopez than three runs on eight hits over eight innings. As a team they were 1-for-8 with RISP and left eight men on base.
Brett Gardner was one of the few Yankees who had a good game. He went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Nick Swisher also had a nice night, going 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada also drove in runs on the night.
Time to turn the page on this crapfest and move on to tomorrow’s game. Andy Pettitte will start for the Yanks, with Dan Haren going for Arizona. First pitch is set for 10:10 p.m. and the game will be on YES.
