Tonight’s New York Yankees game versus the Tampa Bay Rays was rained out, meaning Derek Jeter‘s pursuit of 3,000 hits will be postponed until the weekend. While the Yankees would like to have Jeter reach 3,000 hits as soon as possible, fans with tickets to Friday’s game may be even more upset with Mother Nature.
Tickets for the Rays-Yankees series were in high demand as ticket prices on the secondary market averaged more than twice the tickets face value. According to the secondary ticket retailer StubHub, the least expensive price for a ticket for Friday evening was $87 for an outfield grandstand ticket. That ticket has a face value of $23 normally.
While the New York Yankees will honor tickets for Friday’s rained out matchup for a rescheduled September 22 date, the team will not have to compensate fans for expense beyond face value.
Obviously, Derek Jeter getting his 3,000th hit in tonight’s game was not assured, but ticket holders will have this disappointment doubled after shelling out top dollar for what will be just entrance to an ordinary September game.
Derek Jeter will have two more dates this weekend versus the Rays to get his 3,000th hit before the All-Star break.
