Derek Jeter’s career batting average is .312, but oddsmakers believe the Yankee shortstop’s final season will be less productive.
Jeter announced this week he will retire after the 2014 season, which prompted plenty of water-cooler discussions around his place in history. And it prompted sportsbooks to put their money where their mouths are in making Jeter odds on his final season.
OddsShark.com listed a .290 batting average over-under number Thursday, a full 22 points below his career average, from one sportsbook it monitors.
They also set 120.5 as the over-under on his games played, the result of a 2013 campaign when he got into just 17 games.
They also posted a huge long-shot prop that he will change his mind and play beyond 2014. The “yes” answer to that betting question is a 20-1 long shot.
With eight 200-hit seasons and 3,316 career hits, Jeter could easily surpass Honus Wagner on the career hits list for shortstops. He needs 115 hits to pass the famed Pirates Hall of Famer, who has remained in the news over the years due to extremely rare and valuable baseball cards bearing his likeness.
Jeter will earn a paltry $12 million in 2014, which is still nearly 100 times his rookie salary of $130,000 back in 1996, per Baseball Reference. It was a renegotiated amount after his original deal called for a $9.5-million pittance.
