According to ESPN.com and the Associated Press, Yankee captain Derek Jeter worked out on a baseball field Monday for the first time since breaking his left ankle last October.

The 38-year-old shortstop fielded 55 ground balls and also hit in a batting cage at the Yankees‘ minor league complex in Tampa, Florida.

According to Jeter, “Everything went well.”

Luckily for the Yankees, Jeter seems to be right on pace to return to the lineup at the beginning of the season and is in line with his usual on-field pre-spring training routine.

The 13-time All-Star broke his ankle while lunging for a ground ball in the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers.  He eventually had surgery a week later and was scheduled to take four to five months to recover.

While the injury initially looked pretty devastating when it first occurred, Jeter walked without a limp and had zero complications in front of both team officials and trainer Mark Littlefield on Monday.

Though he didn’t run during the 90-minute session, he could begin more strenuous workouts at the start of spring training in mid-February.

Jeter, who led the American League in at-bats and hits last season, will be going into his 19th season with the Yankees in 2013.

The former Rookie of Year winner is also a five-time Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner and has also received MVP votes 12 times in his illustrious career.

Jeter also has 3,304 career hits, good for 11th on the all-time list.

With an impressive comeback year in 2012, it would be great to see him come back to form in 2013.

Fingers crossed that there won’t be any recurring setbacks from the horrifying injury he suffered in the playoffs.
