Yankees reliever David Robertson left today’s game in the middle of the 7th inning with what they’re calling a mild lower back strain.
This injury is no doubt the result from a line drive that Twins catcher Joe Mauer hit Robertson in the back with last week. Initially Robertson said the Mauer’s line drive didn’t hurt him and that his belt had absorbed most of the impact, but in the middle of today’s game it must have tightened up on him.
It doesn’t sound like this is going to land Robertson on the DL. After the game Girardi said it was more of a day-to-day thing. So Robertson will probably get the rest of the weekend off before being reevaluated.
It is good news that he is not expected to land on the DL with this. The Yankees bullpen has been in disarray lately and Robertson was supposed to be one of the bigger pieces in that pen this year. Hopefully this thing doesn’t have any lingering effects, but when it comes to back problems and pitchers the two things don’t mix well. Just ask Alfredo Aceves .
