CC Sabathia Injury: What to Expect from Adam Warren in Ace’s Absence

With CC Sabathia on the shelf for the next couple of starts nursing a groin strain, the New York Yankees have chosen to give his starts to rookie right-hander Adam Warren.

Warren is one of the Yankees high-tiered pitching prospects, but not many fans are aware of what he can bring to the table.

He is the definition of an innings eater, tossing 152.1 innings last season. In those innings, he struck out 111 and walked 53.

By now means is he a power pitcher. He throws strikes and lets the offense put the ball in play. A quality slider was recently added to his arsenal, and he’ll occasionally go to that with two strikes.

His best breaking pitch is his curveball. He threw one in college, but the Yankees really helped him to refine it into a quality pitch.

Aside from his slider and curve, he’s your typical fastball/changeup pitcher. He throws both a two-seamer and a four-seamer. The latter being his bread and butter pitch, coming in anywhere from 93-96 mph.

Warren has the makeup and experience to have already gotten a shot on some other pitching-deprived teams, but the fact that he’s with the Yankees has held him back a bit.

It’s unlikely to see him as anything more than a future No. 5 starter with the Yankees, but if he pans out, he’ll be a great addition to the back of the rotation.

He should consider this two or three start opportunity a tryout of sorts, as the Yankees may look to him again if they can’t pull of a trade to replace Andy Pettitte.
