Brian Cashman on Catching Situation: “I Believe in Russell Martin, Period.”

Russell Martin had an absolutely abysmal first half.

Through the season’s first 68 games, Martin has compiled a line of .179/.300/.348 with eight home runs and 21 RBI. His .300 on-base percentage is astounding when you consider his minuscule batting average, but that’s really the only positive you can take from Martin’s offense in the first half.

Even with his lack of production at the plate, Martin has been a contributor to the New York Yankees and their climb from one of the season’s early disappointments to having the best record in the majors.

What he offers behind the plate on defense and while controlling the pitching staff is something that is hard to put a value on.

The lack of offense he has provided thus far has really begun to frustrate Yankee fans, and it may soon get to the point where his defense may not even be enough to save him in their minds.

The Yankees don’t have all that many holes, but catcher would be the most logical place to upgrade at the deadline. Not so fast, says general manager Brian Cashman (via Marc Carig, the Star-Ledger).

“We have our catching. I believe in Russell Martin, period.”

Maybe the vote of confidence will help to spark something in the Canadian-native. He recently endured a brutal 0-for-30 stretch, and hasn’t even been the same offensive contributor that hit a subpar .237 last season.

Martin may not be guy that will ruin the Yankees’ season if he doesn’t produce, but he could surely help them progress through the postseason if he brings that average up to at least .200.
