Aubrey Huff to New York Yankees Rumors: ‘I’m Pretty Much Retired’

The New York Yankees got bad news this week on their star first baseman.
Mark Teixeira suffered a wrist injury during batting practice of the World Baseball Classic and will be sidelined for eight to 10 weeks.
With that injury, the Yankees have been looking around for potential fill-ins that could be a temporary solution to Teixeira.
One of those solutions that was brought up was veteran Aubrey Huff, who last played in 2012 with the World Series champion San Francisco Giants.
However, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 36-year-old Huff is not interested in playing for any team this year.
“I’m pretty much retired,” Huff just said by phone. He had hoped to get a spring-training invite but got no calls over the winter. He is 36 and coming off two poor seasons, a knee injury, back issues and a battle with depression.
Huff said he “absolutely” was fine with not playing.
“I have no regrets,” he said. “I love it. I’m having a great time with my wife and kids. I don’t even have an itch to pick up a baseball bat. I wondered if I’d feel that desire when everybody reported to spring training, but I didn’t.”
In 2012, Huff only played in 52 games and hit just .192 with one home run and seven RBI.
If, in fact, Huff is retiring for good, he will end a 13-year career with 242 home runs playing with the Tampa Bay Rays, Houston Astros, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers and most recently the Giants.
With San Francisco, Huff was a part of the two Giants teams that won the World Series in 2010 and 2012.
So with Huff now off the list of options the Yankees could have looked at, the Bombers will need to search elsewhere if they want to add depth to the team.
Of course, they could just fill the roles internally with the likes of Juan Rivera or Dan Johnson.
But I don’t think the Yankees and Brian Cashman will stop searching the market for players who could help the team out in 2013.
But for now, Huff won’t be a Yankee anytime soon.
