Andy Pettitte and the New York Yankees have agreed upon a one-year, $2.5 million minor league contract, according to Jack Curry of the YES Network (via FanIQ.com).
At age 39, Pettitte will attempt his comeback after an entire season out of the game.
In 2010, Pettitte went 11-3 with a 3.28 ERA in 21 starts. He pitched so well that he was invited to be a member of the All-Star weekend festivities.
It’s highly unlikely that Pettitte makes the club right out of spring training, as he’s already a few weeks behind the other starters in camp.
That being said, it’s an entirely likely possibility that he could be called up in May after he gets some minor league innings under his belt.
At $2.5 million, the Yankees clearly plan on using Pettitte if he can prove he’s still in playing shape.
He would instantly slot ahead of Freddy Garcia and Phil Hughes in the fifth starter’s spot, and he could provide veteran playoff experience should the Yankees make the postseason in 2012.
Yankees fans should be excited that Pettitte’s back. It not only means a fan-favorite has returned, but also that the Yankees rotation just got that much deeper.
