Andy Pettitte: New York Yankees Pitcher to DL for 6 Weeks with Fractured Ankle

This is not a good day for the Yankees.
On Wednesday morning, it was announced that CC Sabathia was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a groin strain and will likely be out until after the All-Star break.
Just hours later, they got even worse news, as Andy Pettitte will be placed on the disabled list after suffering a fractured ankle from getting hit by a comebacker off the bat of the Indians‘ Casey Kotchman in the fifth inning:

Pettitte attempted to stay in the game, but his ankle didn’t feel right when he threw a strike, which forced Joe Girardi to pull him from the game.
Pettitte is 3-3 with a 3.22 ERA with 59 strikeouts in just 58.2 innings pitched—outstanding numbers for the 40-year-old who sat out all of 2011.
This is a tough loss for the Yankees, as Pettitte was pitching very well for the Bombers in 2012 and was pitching well on Wednesday before getting hit on the ankle.
Pettitte had seven strikeouts through four innings and could have easily dominated the Indians lineup for a few more innings.
The injuries to Sabathia and now Pettitte leave a huge hole in the Yankees’ starting rotation, which may force Yankees GM Brian Cashman to make a move.
All the Yankees can hope for now is that Pettitte’s ankle heals properly, and that he’ll be ready in August with a fresh arm for the end of the season and into October.
Not a good 24 hours for the Bombers.
