Alfonso Soriano has been setting New York City on fire over the course of two days with a historic offensive explosion that might spark the New York Yankees to another year of October baseball.

Over the last two games, Soriano has gone 6-for-9 with four home runs and 13 RBI, including a seven-RBI effort Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels.

He started things off with a bang, hitting a grand slam in the first inning that gave the Yankees a 4-0 lead.

Soriano followed it up with a two-run double in the second inning and solo home run in the fifth, finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a walk. The Dominican outfielder’s RBI outburst over two games has been replicated in MLB history less times than you can count on one hand.

Soriano struggled a bit out of the gate with the Yankees, batting .193 with three home runs and eight RBI over his first 15 games with the club. But the last two games have been a completely different story.

And it’s not that Soriano has just been putting up these numbers with scrubs on the mound. All seven of his RBI Wednesday were against Angels ace Jered Weaver.

Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times tweeted this out this quote from Angels manager Mike Scioscia:

Unless you’re on the level of a superstar like Miguel Cabrera, four home runs and 13 RBI in a month would be considered a good effort.

The Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN’s Stats and Information) provided some historical context to Soriano’s offensive onslaught:

In a season where a lot has gone wrong for the Yankees, fans are happy to have some good news come their way. The offense has shown signs of life and things might be working in their favor after winning five of six.

The Yankees are still in fourth place and 8.5 games back in the division. It may not make a difference, but the Bronx Bombers are at least starting to show more energy on the field.

Maybe it’s the return of certain player into the lineup or the fact that the baseball gods got tired of beating up on the Yanks.

Fact of the matter is, New York fans have enjoyed the last two nights and nothing will rain on their parade.
