Joe Girardi, New York Yankees Make No Excuses in Wake of Injuries

What on Earth did the Yankees do to enrage the baseball Gods?
Did Babe Ruth do something ungodly in the afterlife that warranted the unleashing of ill spirits towards the Yankees? Did Billy Martin fly off the handle once again? Did the great George Steinbrenner break some rules he shouldn’t have?
I ask because this is the only way I can explain the dog pile of injuries plaguing the Yankees this season. It’s not just the rash of injuries that are utterly confusing, it’s more how these injuries are occurring.
Brett Gardner’s right elbow injury is innocent enough. That was until Gardner re-aggravated his injury trying to return to action too early.
Still, Gardner’s injury and subsequent stubbornness is by no means rare.
But concussions? And whiplash?
And one iconic closer tearing his ACL while shagging routine fly balls in the outfield? Mariano Rivera had done this nearly his entire career without incident, by the way.
More casualties to come, Mark Teixeira has been battling a bronchial infection that scares the daylights out umpires who watch this man endure wild coughing fits.
And even after having time to absorb, I am wholly convinced someone or something had it out for Ivan Nova in Baltimore Monday.
First, Nova takes a sharp line drive off his right foot. The loud, heart-dropping thump of the baseball pounding Nova’s cleat made everyone cringe.
Friend or foe, spectating baseball fans held their breath as Nova winced in pain. Amazingly, Nova mustered enough strength to shake off the pain and soldier on.
This was until the bottom half of the sixth inning, when Nova sprained the same foot while fielding an infield chopper off the bat of Wilson Betemit.
During the injury delay, left-handed hurler Clay Rapada entered the game to hold the fort for the departed Nova. After one-third of an inning, Rapada had to exit stage right after acquiring a virus.
Last but not least, drum roll please! Tuesday, the Yankees revealed David Robertson was placed on the 15-day DL with a strained oblique.
Rafael Soriano, buckle down and beware—someone wake Yankees fans from this terrible nightmare!
With all the injuries, it’s amazing this franchise is able field a competitive lineup each day.
Yet, this team marches toward victory without excuse. This says a ton about this proud Yankees franchise.
Joe Girardi and Co. is still able to win, even when Ruth, Martin and Steinbrenner get out of line in the kingdom.
