Let the “the Yankees need to go outside of the organization for a closer” debates begin.

David Robertson was shaky in his first save of the season on Tuesday night against the Rays, but he completely failed to record the save on Wednesday night.

David Phelps, in the second start of his career, let up zero runs in five innings.

The combination of Boone Logan, Cory Wade and Rafael Soriano then held the Rays scoreless until the top of the ninth, when Robertson entered with a 1-0 lead.

Robertson proceeded to allow four runs, three of which came on a home run by Matt Joyce.

He lasted just 0.2 innings, as Clay Rapada came in to the get the final out of the ninth.

It was Robertson’s first loss of the season, and his ERA sits at 2.63. That number is astronomically high considering his 1.08 ERA last season.

Joe Girardi will likely give Robertson a few more chances before removing him from the closer’s role, as he figures to be the heir to the closer’s role when Mariano Rivera actually retires.

Should he keep struggling, Girardi should have no problems handing over the reins to Rafael Soriano.

Girardi will have to pay close attention to Robertson’s next outing.

If he can recover strong and come back to record a save, then Girardi shouldn’t be worried about his young closer.

If he falters, then it may be time to consider other options.
